James Turrell has been commissioned by Yorkshire Sculpture Park to make a permanent Skyspace at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP). It is funded by ArtFund, an art charity in the UK.
By cutting holes and building rooms within the infrastructure of galleries and museums, Turrell takes everything that is artificial about the experience of looking at art - enclosed rooms, artificial light, recirculated air, lack of physical touch - and makes it real again.
The Skyspace has been created at Yorkshire Sculpture Park’ s deer shelter. This building is Grade II Listed. The tranquillity of the site is undisturbed and creates a place of contemplation and revelation. Through the roof is a hole in which the viewer of the artwork can look into and take in the breathtaking view from the sky.
James Turrell has a long love of the north of England and has been thinking about transforming the space for a while. Being an internationally renowed artist exhibiting in YSP means that the growing reputation of the park will flourish even more and bring world-wide travellers in to visit. YSP is also hosting an exhibition of James Turrell’s light installations in the Underground Gallery until September 2006.
Andy Goldsworthy is exhibiting also at the YSP until January 2008. the exhibition is sponsored by Roger Evans and The Henry Moore Foundation.
The exhibition is the largest and most spectacular project ever curated at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Goldsworthy’s most recent work is featured in this exhibition, including outdoor commissioned work and other indoor collections ranging from installations made from the natural world, and paintings and drawings of sheep and blood.
Goldsworthy’s artworks are given meaningful context by photographic archive material and key works from the artist’s career. This exhibition proves to be one of goldsworthy’s greatest, whilst focusing on his acheivement in the artworld and the complexity of his work.
