Damien Hirst has teamed up with Bono of famed rock band U2 to host a charity auction which took place on February 14th 2008 at Sotheby’s New York. The auction has raised money for ‘Product Red’, the Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

The total amount raised for the charity was 21.6 million pounds, which exceeded original expectations. Hirst and Bono are delighted with the auctions success and it is thanks also to the artists who donated their art for the event.

Hirst asked 60 or so of his artist friends, including Jeff Koons, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Marc Quinn, Banksy, Takashi Murakami and Andreas Gursky, to donate a piece for the auction, which were based on the theme of ‘Red’.

Hirst’s contribution consisted of 7 works, the most expensive, ‘Where There’s a Will There’s a Way’, a medicine chest sculpture which leads on from his pharmaceutical ‘dot’ prints which Eyestorm published back in 2001.

83 of the artworks were on display at the Gagosian Gallery in New York, which showcased the work before the auction.
